Self-host Figma
Design / collaborative vector editor ·
Category: wiki, docs & notes
Figma is the default collaborative design tool. The self-hostable replacement (Penpot) has reached production quality for vector design + prototyping; the gap is the plugin ecosystem and Figma's auto-layout polish.
Figma pricing anchor: Free up to 3 files; $15/editor/mo on Professional.

MPL-2.0 - Setup time
- 20min docker-compose
- Monthly cost
- $10 VPS for a small team — Penpot uses Postgres + Redis + a few worker images.
Migration sketch. Figma → Right-click frame → Copy as SVG, paste into Penpot. For full files, use the third-party `figma-to-penpot` exporter (community plugin) which converts a .fig export into Penpot's native format. Components and design tokens come over; auto-layout needs review.
Good fit forDesign teams that want full Figma-style multi-user editing on their own infra.
Weak atPlugin ecosystem is much smaller than Figma's.

Migration sketch. Different category — sketches and diagrams, not high-fidelity UI design. Use it where Figma was overkill (whiteboarding, system diagrams). No Figma importer, by design.
Good fit forWhiteboarding and rough wireframes.
Weak atNot a Figma replacement for UI mockups.
